Nick J. de Vries emigrated in 1955 at the age of eleven to the United States from the Netherlands. His family settled in Abilene, Texas. In 1966 he graduated from Hardin-Simmons University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. After serving in the United States Army in Germany as a Medical Service officer, he returned to Texas where he completed the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Houston. In 1971 he received the Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma with a specialization in ceramic sculpture.
He has taught for Rice University, the University of Houston, and is currently Professor of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Houston-Clear Lake where he has been employed since 1975. He has served as a Visiting Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava, Slovak Republic, and at the Catholic University of Peru, Lima, Peru. Professor de Vries was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava in 1995. The academy bestowed upon him the title of “Honorary Professor.”
