Levente Polyák

Born in 1979 in Budapest, Hungary, I live in Paris, France. I studied architecture, art theory and sociology in Budapest and Paris. Currently I am finishing a Master 2 degree in Urbanism at the Institut d'Urbanisme de Paris, and another one in Urban Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.
Between 2004 and 2006 I worked for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, where I conducted research on cultural factors of urban regeneration. In 2004 I co-edited the Budapest application for the 2010 European Capital of Culture competition, and worked as jury member in the ECC process of Pecs in the following years. In 2007-08, I worked at the New York City Department of City Planning as an intern, where I researched density patterns for rezoning projects as well as the design of privately owned public spaces in Manhattan. In 2009, I started working at the Délégation à la Politique de la Ville et à l'Intégration, a municipal agency of the City of Paris, where I work on the programmation of a public space and the conception of a cultural equipment at the northern periphery of Paris.
I have published numerous academic articles and essays in printed and digital media, in a variety of periodicals in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and the United Kingdom. As a member of various civic organizations in Budapest, Paris and New York, I worked on a number of exhibitions, conferences and workshops, mostly related to urban phenomena and architecture.
In recent years, I participated at diverse art and cultural projects. In 2006 I co-directed ‘Rounding Off', a documentary video discovering the heritage of modernist housing estates in Hungary, that has been screened in Budapest, Berlin, New York, Bangalore and New Delhi. In 2007 I co-edited ‘Die Planung', a Berlin experimental magazine about the future and the possibility of planning, and ‘In-Between Zones', a catalogue of a series of artistic interventions in the public domain. In 2008, I launched the Budapest Architectural Film Days series, with a first edition at the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre.
Besides the DPVI and writing, I work on radio and sound pieces as well as on interview series about architecture centres and organizations dealing with urbanism.
