Tom Mossman is Professor of Art at Los Angeles Valley College and teaches courses in graphic design,
illustration, lettering, photography, and two-dimensional design. Mossman received his undergraduate
degree from Kent State University where he studied with acclaimed artist and former Bauhaus instructor,
Josef Albers. Mossman received his graduate degree from California State University, Los Angeles. With a strong background in studio art practices and years of working in the graphic design industry, Mossman has
a nuanced understanding of art that incorporates all types of artmaking as valid forms of artistic expression.
He is both artist and designer, not ascribing to misguided ideas that divide the visual arts into categories of craft versus fine art, or applied arts versus fine art. He continues to make his personal work and run his
Los Angeles-based graphic design firm of twenty-eight years, Principal in Mossman Design. He has received significant awards for his design work, including four gold and three silver medals in Graphic Design, Photography and Illustration by Communication Arts and Print magazine. Mossman is a longtime member
of AIGA/LA (American Institute of Graphic Artists) and ADLA (Art Directors Club of Los Angeles).
He also co-authored The Furniture of Gustav Stickley published by Simon and Schuster.
