U příležitosti doprovodného programu Evropského festivalu skla (European Glass Festival) v polské Wrocławi probíhá výstavní debut Sebastiana Kitzbergera, který je studentem Ateliéru skla UMPRUM (pod vedením doc. ak. soch. Ronyho Plesla). Sebastian stojí na pomyslném začátku své kariéry a samotná výstava Beginning odkazuje k charakteru všech začátků tak, jak je Sebastian Kitzberger a kurátorka Alena Štěrbová vnímají. Idea výstavy je podpořena instalací z dřevěných hranolů, které kontrastují s delikátností skleněných objektů a zároveň ji umocňují.
Sebastian Kitzberger graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and now stands at the notional beginning of his career. The character of the exhibition links to the nature of all beginnings in general, as Sebastian and I perceive them. The installation is not pompous, but modest. The simple desk, made from wooden prism blocks, supports the fragile and delicate nature of glass objects, even though based on the contrast between materiality and materials.
The glass pieces designed by Sebastian are playful, full of new perspectives and modes of how to work with glass. He designs and creates glass to be primarily functional pieces. However, the artefacts he creates are sculptural, and fine objects even when not being used for their intended purpose. His work pushes boundaries, explores new dimensions of glasswork, and displays precise craft. He experiments with glass, while respecting the properties of the material.
One of the hallmark features of his work is the reinterpretation of iconic and classic pieces. His work is influenced by different approaches, but maintains his own characteristic approach. Sebastian's pieces are heavily influenced by aspects of Italian postmodern or historical vocabulary, devotional objects and simple, organic or geometric shapes. In his latest projects Sebastian reflects various wooden structures into glass, blows glass into moulds made from fruit, and reinterprets classical pressed glass lampshades by cutting the structure and modifying the shapes to emphasize the contemporary character of the object.
Sebastian is able to flawlessly balance the traditions of glass and current tendencies in the field of design. His pieces respect the history and culture of glasswork, while also infusing his own context and perspectives.
Sebastian Kitzberger, 1992, is a master candidate at the Glass Studio led by Rony Plesl at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, the Czech Republic. He graduated from the Art Glass School in Valašské Meziříčí, the Czech Republic, 2012. He has completed an internship at the Concept –Object – Meaning Studio (K.O.V.), led by Eva Eisler at the AAAD in Prague, the Czech Republic. He has participated in a couple of group exhibitions, including the Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milano, Italy, 2015; London Design Festival, GB, 2014; Designblok 2014, Prague, the Czech Republic.
Sebastian Kitzberger is cooperating with Štěpán Smetana, a student of the Studio of Architecture at the AAAD in Prague and they are designing a series of lights called Beginning. They have been awarded the Design Talent Card at Designblok 2014 and they received the Award of the Chancellor of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava at DESIGN.S – International Biennial of Student Design in Brno, 2016. They have been nominated as the Discovery of the Year, Czech Grand Design Awards, 2015.
