Abstract: In a special edition of Kunst & Kirche magazine, examining religious life in the post-secular age and focusing on the Czech Republic, discusses themes of spirituality in Czech contemporary art of the 20th century. The author suggests that Christian iconography and spiritual themes continued to play a major role in Czech art despite the thorny relationship between the church and the art establishment during the period and particularly under the Communist regime from 1946 to 1989. She takes issue with the assertion of leading art historian Jindrich Chalupecky (1910-1990) that Czech civilization was godless, positing instead that art was often used during the bleakest periods of the 20th century to fill human spiritual needs. She examines the history of religious and spiritual themes in Czech art, with particular reference to the work of Bohumil Kubista (1884-1918), Bohuslav Reynek (1892-1971), Vera Novakova (b.1928), Alen Divis (1900-1956), Mikulas Medek (1926-1974) and Vaclav Bostik (1913-2005).
